Rules and safety
Last updated October 14, 2026
GotWork is a place to find a hand or lend one. These rules keep it safe and fair for everyone.
What GotWork is
- GotWork helps people in Ontario find each other for gigs. That is all it does.
- GotWork does not handle money. You and the other person agree on the pay and settle it yourselves.
- GotWork is not an employer or an agency. It does not check skills, licences, insurance or background.
- The Verified mark means one thing: the person showed government photo ID with the name on their profile, their face matched it, and they are 18 or older.
Who can use it
- You are 18 or older and you are in Ontario.
- You have one account, and it is yours. Use your real name.
- You confirm your identity before you post a gig or send a message.
Gigs that are not allowed
- Anything against the law.
- Sexual services, escorting, or adult content.
- Anything to do with illegal drugs, weapons or stolen goods.
- Asking someone to pay a fee or deposit, buy gift cards, cash a cheque, or pass along money or packages. These are common scams.
- Pyramid schemes and "recruit others to earn" offers.
- Ads for a business or product instead of a real task.
- Work for anyone under 18.
- Work that needs a licence in Ontario, such as electrical or gas work, unless the gig says a licence is required and a licensed person does it.
- Gigs that turn people away because of who they are, for example their race, religion, gender, age or disability.
Photos on a gig
- Only photos of the task: the couch to move, the yard to clean. Up to 4 on a gig.
- Only photos you took or have the right to share.
- No people, faces or children in the photos.
- Nothing that shows where you live, such as a house number, a street sign or a licence plate.
- Nothing sexual, violent or hateful, and no text, ads or phone numbers.
- Photos that break these rules are removed with the gig.
How to treat each other
- Be honest about the task, the time and what you can do.
- Be respectful. No insults, hate, threats or unwanted sexual messages.
- Do not send the same message to lots of people.
- Do not share someone else's private details.
- If plans change, say so. Mark your gig as filled when you have found someone.
- When a gig is done, answer "Did it go well?" honestly. Never ask for, offer or trade answers.
Staying safe
- Agree on the task, the time and the pay before any work starts.
- Never pay to get a gig. Never send money, gift cards, bank details, your Social Insurance Number (SIN) or a password to someone you met here.
- Keep chatting on GotWork until you are comfortable sharing more.
- For an in-person gig, tell someone you trust where you will be and when.
- Meet in a public place first when you can.
- If something feels wrong, you can stop and leave.
- If you or someone else is in danger, call 911.
Report and block
- To report a gig, open it and choose Report this gig.
- To report or block a person, open your conversation with them and choose Report or block.
- The other person is not told who reported or blocked them.
- When you report a conversation, GotWork staff can read that conversation to review your report. Staff do not read conversations that nobody has reported.
- When you block someone, you stop seeing each other's gigs and cannot message each other. You can unblock them from Me, under Blocked people.
When rules are broken
- GotWork can remove a gig, pause an account, or close an account.
- A paused account cannot post or message, and its gigs are hidden. The person is told on their Home page.
- Serious matters may be passed to the police when the law requires or allows it.
Limits
To slow down spam, each person can:
- post up to 3 gigs a day,
- start up to 10 new conversations a day,
- send up to 60 messages an hour, and
- send up to 10 reports a day.
