This page says what GotWork keeps about you, why, who sees it, and what you can do about it.

The short version

  • GotWork keeps only what it needs to match people with gigs.
  • Other people never see your email address, your full last name or your postal code.
  • GotWork does not keep a copy of your ID or your selfie.
  • GotWork does not sell your information and shows no ads.

GotWork, based in Ontario, Canada, decides what information is collected here and is responsible for keeping it safe.

What GotWork keeps

  • Your email address. Used to sign you in and to send the emails you chose.
  • Your profile. Your first and last name, a few words about you, your postal code, how far you will travel, and your skills.
  • Your identity check result. The check is done by Didit, an identity check company. You show Didit your government photo ID and a selfie. GotWork tells Didit the first and last name on your profile, so Didit can check that your ID shows the same name. GotWork keeps only the result (for example approved or declined), a short reason if it was declined, the date, the name the check was for, and a reference number. Didit holds the ID and selfie under its own privacy policy. Health cards are not accepted.
  • Your gigs. The title, description, kind of task, date, the general area, and any photos you add. Before a photo is sent, your phone or computer makes it smaller, and details stored inside it, such as where it was taken, are removed. GotWork removes them again when the photo arrives.
  • How gigs went. When a gig is filled, the person who posted it can say who did it, and each of them can say whether it went well. These answers are not shown to anyone, including the other person. Only a count is shown: how many gigs a person completed where both said it went well.
  • Your messages. Kept so both people in a conversation can read them.
  • Reports and blocks. What you reported and who you blocked.
  • Technical records. Sign-in times, and records that help stop abuse, such as how many sign-in emails were asked for.

What other people see

  • Your first name and the first letter of your last name.
  • The Verified mark, once your identity is confirmed.
  • How many gigs you completed where both people said it went well, once there is one.
  • Photos on your gigs, to the same people who can see the gig. Photos are kept in a private store and are shown through links that stop working after an hour.
  • On your gigs: the general area, taken from the first three characters of the postal code, and about how far away it is. Never the full postal code or an address.
  • A person who posts a gig may see your name, a skill that fits, and about how far away you are, as someone who fits their gig.
  • The messages you send them.

Who at GotWork can read messages

GotWork staff do not read conversations. The one exception: when someone in a conversation reports it, staff can read that conversation to review the report. Each time that happens, it is recorded.

Emails

  • Sign-in emails are always sent, because they are how you get in.
  • Emails about new messages are on unless you turn them off. They never contain the message.
  • Emails about gigs that fit you are off until you turn them on.
  • You can change these under Me, then Emails. Every such email also has a link that turns it off.

Companies that help run GotWork

GotWork uses a few companies to run the site. They only get what they need for that job.

  • Supabase stores the database and gig photos, in Canada.
  • Vercel hosts the website.
  • Resend sends GotWork's emails and holds the mail people send to us.
  • Didit does the identity check.

Some of these companies handle information outside Canada, including in the United States and Europe, where the laws of those places apply to it.

GotWork may also share information when the law requires it, for example in answer to a court order.

How long it is kept

  • Your information is kept while you have an account.
  • You can delete your account yourself under Me. Your profile, skills, gigs, photos, conversations and messages are deleted with it, straight away, and GotWork asks Didit to delete its record of your identity check.
  • Reports you sent, and records of actions taken on accounts, are kept without your name, to keep the site safe and to meet legal duties.

Your choices

  • See and change your profile under Me.
  • Turn emails on or off under Me, then Emails.
  • Ask for a copy of what GotWork keeps about you.
  • Ask for something to be corrected.
  • Delete your account and what is in it, under Me, then Delete my account.

If you are not happy with an answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Keeping it safe

  • The site uses encrypted connections.
  • There are no passwords to steal. You sign in with a link sent to your email.
  • The database only lets each person read what is theirs or what is meant to be shared.

Age

GotWork is for people 18 and older.
